The Irish Tax Institute Third-Level Scholarship Programme is your opportunity to receive financial assistance through third-level education and progress to the AITI programme to begin your career as an AITI Chartered Tax Adviser. If you aspire to a dynamic profession, one which offers top-level opportunities in business and industry, but require financial support to progress to third level, then this programme is an ideal opportunity for you.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
Leaving Certificate students in the Republic of Ireland who are interested in a career in taxation but who require financial support to progress to third level can apply for the Scholarship.
Applications must:
- be nominated by the school Guidance Counsellor, Principal or teacher with an accompanying reference,
- feel that they will be able to achieve at least 420 points in the Leaving Certificate,
- be interested in studying a relevant third-level undergraduate degree (business, legal or other relevant discipline); and
- be motivated, enthusiastic students who are committed to entering into the exciting and dynamic world of taxation.
Mature students who are applying to study a relevant qualification may also apply. On completion of his or her relevant third-level undergraduate degree the Scholar is expected to proceed to complete the three-year part-time Associateship of the Irish Tax Institute (AITI) programme in the appropriate timescale, qualifying as an AITI Chartered Tax Adviser.
Steps to Scholarship
1. Guidance Counsellors and teachers should approach suitable candidates and assess their level of interest. Interest must be registered with the Institute by 29 February 2012.
2. Application forms will be sent to Guidance Counsellors.
3. Students should complete their application form in full and return them to the Irish Tax Institute by 30 March 2012. These should be accompanied by:
a. A 300-word profile from the student as to why they think they should receive the Scholarship; and
b. A recommendation letter from the Guidance Counsellor or other relevant school personnel (such as the Principal or Vice-Principal).
4. Once students receive their Leaving Certificate results, they must notify the Institute of their results.
5. The Irish Tax Institute Scholarship Committee will assess the applications and shortlist a number of candidates. Interviews will take place in September 2012.
6. Following the interviews, the successful candidate will receive his or her award and will be officially presented with his or her Scholarship at the Irish Tax Institute conferring ceremony in 2012.

How will candidates be selected?
The Irish Tax Institute Scholarship Committee,comprising of education and taxation experts associated with the Institute, will undertake the selection process. The decision including the level of financial assistance awarded is final and the Institute will not enter into negotiation following the announcement of the winner. All applications will be reviewed by the committee and evaluated accordingto the following criteria:
- the candidate’s motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to completing this Scholarship Programme and to pursuing a career in taxation;
- proven academic record showing the candidate’s ability to successfully complete a relevant third-level undergraduate degree and the AITI Chartered Tax Adviser qualification;
- the candidate’s requirement for financial support to progress on to third-level education after completion of the Leaving Certificate;
- the candidate’s suitability in terms of skills and personal qualities demonstrated in the application form and interview process; and
- the ability to achieve 420 points in the Leaving Certificate, notification and supporting documentation of which must be sent to the Irish Tax Institute.
What will the Scholarship cover?
The Irish Tax Institute Third-Level Scholarship Programme will (subject to the Rules of the Scholarship) provide an award towards living expenses and books. This amount will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Scholarship Committee. This will be paid to the Scholar on a monthly basis from October to May. The amount of the Scholarship will be decided by the judging panel and their decision is final. On completion of the third-level undergraduate degree, the Scholarship will cover the costs of the AITI Chartered Tax Adviser qualification.
Support for the Scholar
The Scholar will be provided with a mentor from the Irish Tax Institute to provide support to them throughout their time in the Scholarship Programme. The Scholar will also be required to maintain regular contact with their mentor and the Institute throughout the years of the Scholarship and to participate in events associated with the Scholarship and promotion of the career of the Chartered Tax Adviser.
Scholarship key dates
- Closing date for applications: 30 March 2012
- Submission of Leaving Certificate results to the Irish Tax Institute immediately after the results are released
- Interviews of eligible shortlisted applicants: September 2012
- Official presentation of Scholarship to successful candidate at the Irish Tax Institute conferring ceremony.
