Ruth Ellen O'Donovan - Deloitte
I studied Law in UCD and during final year I discovered, by default, that the elements of law which I was interested in (such as revenue, commercial, trust and company law) were highly relevant to the type of work a Registered Tax Consultant does. I realised that I could combine my legal interests with a professional tax qualification.
My role is mainly consultancy based and enables me to work with other departments and firm’s partners across the domestic and international firm. The type of work I do provides me with constant challenges. The job itself involves liaising with clients and their advisers, managing a transaction to ensure client expectations, deadlines and budgets are met and updating the partner involved on all aspects of the project.
If you are thinking about career in tax then you need to be aware that legislation is the guiding light for all Registered Tax Consultants, so ensure that you are comfortable with reading and understanding long passages of text. You need to be willing to work hard and be open to the idea of a career which requires constant learning and provides you with constant challenges. Tax law is always evolving and Registered Tax Consultants you need to be aware of the changes which are made to enable us to provide the best advice to our clients.
