Kenneth Nugent - Deloitte
Having undertaken an internship in tax as a student and having studied tax and Revenue Law in college I took a real interest in a career in tax. I was impressed by the career opportunities open to members, including good earning potential, the chance to work in a wide variety of organisations from the private and State sectors, both at home and abroad and the emphasis on career-long training and development.
I am a first year trainee so I am seeing something new every day and learning all the time. My role has a fair degree of responsibility to the role in terms of preparing compliance work in advance of deadlines, gathering relevant information from the audit team and the client and in staying on top of the workload. We are all assigned to a portfolio of clients and the tasks involved are mainly around compliance such as preparing preliminary tax advice, tax computations and the tax returns.
My favourite experience so far was the tax technical training week organised by the firm. While the training was quite intensive it did help me to learn a lot on the tax technical side and will make things easier at exam time.
If you are interested in becoming a Registered Tax Consultant, I would recommend that you should talk to someone working in tax, doing an internship in tax and studying tax subjects if they are available to you.
