Carol Kehoe - Ernst & Young
I chose a career in taxation because I had an interest in the subject and was attracted by the career opportunities open to Registered tax Consultants. I had the option of working in practice, industry, with the Revenue Commissioners and even becoming a lecturer in taxation in a college/university
I really enjoy getting to meet interesting clients/business people. When you suggest a tax planning opportunity to a client - and they get excited by it and decide to pursue it! Another enjoyable aspect of my career is my work with the Institute of Taxation of Ireland - I am a member of the ITI East/South-East Branch Network and represent Registered Tax Consultants in the Waterford area. We meet regularly as a group and also meet the Revenue twice a year. I was also recently asked by the Irish Taxation Institute to present a Capital Gains Tax Update course to other members of the ITI and to be involved in promoting the career to students, each of which have been enjoyable exercises.
As a Registered Tax Consultant, I have my own clients. So my responsibility is to ensure that these clients' tax deadlines are met in an efficient and timely manner. I must also provide tax efficient solutions to client's problems/issues. The ability to be able to prioritise work is essential - performing tax reviews, coming up with tax planning opportunities for clients, assisting with clients' queries, discussing tax planning opportunities and assisting with Revenue audits etc. To do this, I must also stay ahead of taxation developments - by reading tax updates and attending courses.
When thinking about choosing a career, ask yourself, are you a good communicator? If so, you will likely make a good Registered Tax Consultant. Good communication is vital - written and verbal. Get some work experience - try to work in a tax department.
