Marie Duffy - Ernst & Young
I chose tax because I wanted a challenging and interesting career. As tax is constantly changing, there is a variety of service lines in tax to specialize in, so I knew there would be several opportunities for the future. Also because taxation is a very dynamic environment I knew my job would constantly challenge me and would allow me to become a technical consultant with plenty of scope for career development.
The most enjoyable part of my job is when I am involved in team work which involves discussions and interpretation of the legislation. Taxation is not all about calculations; it’s based on interpreting legislation. I have had the opportunity see how strategic tax planning ideas come together which are aimed at specific client circumstances.
In my role, my responsibilities include dealing with a range of clients daily - each with their own tax issues. As a graduate trainee, my responsibilities lie with making sure each of my clients have their returns compiled and ready for filing with the Revenue within the required tax deadline. This involves preparation of the tax return by reviewing financial statistics and also taking into account the company’s individual business circumstances.
The highlight since I’ve begun working in tax has been the variety of people I have met, both my colleagues in work and the clients I have encountered. As I am only a first year trainee, the responsibility assigned to me has also been rewarding.
If you thrive on challenges and would like to work in a dynamic environment where one is faced with a continuously updated legislation, economic and business developments then you should consider working in tax and becoming a Registered Tax Consultant.
